1.1 Pointless Rivalry

Prompt A: Summary

Two Capulet servants are walking around the town of Verona. They talk about fighting men of Montague, a rival house. They then see two Montague servants and begin to insult them. A street fight breaks out and more men from each house join the fight. The Prince of Verona breaks up the fight and says if it happens again they will be punished by death.

Prompt B: Theme

Youthful immaturity can cause destruction and fighting.

Prompt C: Questions

Why do Gregory and Sampson fight when they know they could get killed or in serious trouble? Why does Shakespeare have the Prince come and threaten all who participated in the fight with death? Why does tybalt hate peace? Why does Tybalt want to fight so eagerly, yet Benvolio wants peace? Why do the wives hold back Lord Montague and Lord Capulet?

  1. I also wondered why do the servants fight if they could die, it seems ridiculous. It seems strange that servants would put their lives on the line just for a feud between their master and another family. Also, I believe that Lady Capulet and Lady Montague hold back their husbands because they do not want them getting hurt in the fight.
