1.1 Squabble in the Streets

Prompt A: Summary
Sampson and Gregory, both from the house of Capulet, walk down the street chatting. When they see Abram and a Servingman, both members of their enemy house, Montague, they cause trouble. Sampson bites his thumb toward the two members of Montague, an insult showing disgrace to anyone who bears it. This causes Abram and the Servingman to retaliate, inquiring them about their reasoning behind biting their thumbs. Then, Benvolio, a member of Montague, enters. He tries to get the group to stop arguing. This fails when Tybalt, a member of Capulet, enters and draws his sword, getting ready to fight. Several citizens arrive at the scene with clubs and partisans. When the leaders of Montague and Capulet overhear the fight, they enter the scene and stop it immediately. Prince Escalus, the prince of Verona, then shows up and scolds the two sides for fighting with a long lecture, saying that fighting again can result in their execution. Everyone leaves the scene except for Benvolio and Romeo, who suddenly shows up. Romeo tells Benvolio how he has fell in love with a girl that does not love him back. Benvolio convinces Romeo that there are other beautiful girls in the world, and to be more open minded.

Prompt B: Theme
Unless stopped by a greater force, two sides will never stop fighting unless they learn to agree.

Prompt C: 5 Questions
Tybalt- Why do you encourage the fight to pursue, while Benvolio tries to stop it?
Prince Escalus- How did you know the fight was happening? When did you come up with your lecture?
Sampson- If you knew biting you thumb would upset Abram and the Servingman, why did you do it? Do you want to fight them and get in trouble?
Lord Capulet- Why is your house so much more eager to fight than the Montagues?
Prince Escalus- Are you from another house? Do you live in Verona?

  1. Alec, your theme is reminds me of The Martian Chronicles, which is a good connection to make.

  2. Were Sampson and Gregory really necessary in the summary? I honestly don't really remember their characters at all... Good job otherwise, though!

  6. @Charlize The section starts out with Sampson and Gregory talking and walking down the street, and then starting a fight with the Montagues, which is basically the main point of this section. I thought it was necessary to include them in my summary but I may be mistaken.
