3.1: The Fateful Blow

Prompt A: Mercutio and Benvolio walk through the streets of Verona where Benvolio warns Mercutio that the Capulets may be there. Mercutio shrugs off this warning saying that he would welcome a quarrel if it walked his way. Ironically enough, Tybalt enters the scene still angry from seeing Romeo at his party. Mercutio is about to fight Tybalt until Romeo comes into the scene. Romeo tries to stop the fight but fails when Mercutio is stabbed by Tybalt. Mercutio later dies leaving Benvolio and Romeo in a state of sadness. However, Tybalt has the nerve to come back and face Romeo. Romeo's passive feelings towards fighting before have mutated into an uncontrollable anger that causes him to kill Tybalt in a fit of rage. Romeo flees and is in awe over what he had just done. Benvolio stays and tells the prince the truth about what happened. The prince had judged Romeo to be banished from Verona.

Prompt B: The theme of this scene is to not let your emotions get the best of you no matter what situation may be.

Prompt C:
Romeo- Why did you intervene in this dangerous brawl?
Benvolio- Was there anything you could have done to stop the fight?
Mercutio- What was going through your mind when you decided to fight Tybalt?
Tybalt- Why were you still so angry with Romeo?
Prince- Why did you not punish Romeo with death after his crime?

  1. All of your questions were what I was thinking too. Each one addresses the things that seemed a little out of the ordinary, which is an excellent job on the analysis spectrum. Nice.

  2. Some of your questions are actually what I was thinking through out this scene while reading it! I was really wondering why Benvolio did not do anything to stop the fight because it truly could have changed the whole story if he did. Plus, the Prince's question is also a great mystery to me still because Romeo took someone else's life and all he gets as punishment is banishment? It just truly makes me think why he did such a thing.

  3. Your questions were really strong and relatable, especially your question to Benvolio. It makes people think about just how dedicated he is to helping his friend.

  4. Do you yourself agree with your theme? "No matter what the situation is" is a pretty big statement to make. What if it is acceptable to have your emotions intervene in other situations? An emotionless human being is not necessarily a good one.
