3.5 Untold Grief

Prompt F:
The relationship between Juliet and her mother, Lady Capulet, is not a strong one. As the time gets closer for Juliet to have to marry, she is having to lie more and more to her mom about her relationship with Romeo. Bringing up marrying Paris only makes Juliet dislike Lady Capulet even more. The pressure that Lady Capulet puts on Juliet makes their relationship one that is tough to continue because it creates conflicts. After Lady Capulet tells Juliet she is to marry Paris, Juliet "will not marry yet, and when [she] does, [she] swear[s] it shall be Romeo". Lady Capulet gets angry with Juliet because she is not understanding the importance of marriage. Overall, the relationship between Juliet and Lady Capulet is one that will not last long.

Prompt C:
Juliet--- Even though Romeo killed your cousin, do your feelings still feel as strong as they did before you found out the news?
Juliet-- Being forced to get married, could you really imagine yourself marrying a man whom your entire family hates?
Juliet-- If you had to choose between death over love or marriage against your will, which would you choose?
Lady Capulet-- If you know that your daughter won't be happy with Paris, why make her suffer?
Lady Capulet-- Would you ever reconsider Romeo and his love to your daughter? Could you ever forgive him and let him marry Juliet?

Prompt B:
The theme of this section of the book is sometimes the truth may have to be kept a secret in order to keep peace.

  1. I really like the theme that you used for Prompt B because it is very well fitting with what is going on in the sotry at the moment of Act 3 Scene 5! Juliet is in a tough situation where she loves Romeo so much but she is being forced into marrying Paris instead, so she has to lie a lot about her relationship with Romeo to keep herself and her true love safe.

  2. I like what you said for the relationship between Juliet and her mother because it shows the complexity of the situation and really sets the scene for what will happen later in the story.

  3. I really liked how you analyzed the relationship Juliet had with her mother. It made me stop and think because I never really thought about the relationship that much. You did a good job describing the pressures Juliet her mother put on her. This makes me wonder how far Juliet can continue her tough relationship with Romeo.

  4. The way you explained the relationship between Juliet and her mother is spot on and just what I was thinking. I liked that you brought up the question as to why Juliet does not care very much that Romeo killed her cousin. I know that they are in love, but wouldn't the relationship at least change a little? The theme fits perfectly that you used. It is really true that white lies are sometimes necessary for the greater good. Good job.

  5. I think your first question is really interesting. It is strange how quickly Juliet pushes aside the fact that Romeo murdered Tybalt. Although it was seemingly justified, Juliet recieves little information about Tybalt's death and almost immediately sides with her new husband Romeo? Do you think that this scenario says something important about Juliet's lack of independence?

  6. I think your observation on her relationship between Juliet and Lady Capulet is really good. The way that the relationship becomes at risk because of Juliet problem during marriage clearly shows that they lack a strong relationship. Do you think that if Juliet had not died would Juliet and her mother would totally reject each other?
