Prompt
A:
The
morning after Romeo’s mysterious disappearance, Mercutio and Benvolio wander
throughout Verona wondering where he is. Romeo suddenly appears and Mercutio
proceeds to humiliate him about how down he’s been. However, Romeo in turn goes
along with Mercutio and jokes around with him. Mercutio comments on how Romeo
is more like himself than the days before. The nurse approaches the three
characters and asks to speak to Romeo, but she gets flustered when Mercutio
teases. When Benvolio and Mercutio leave, Romeo calms down the angry nurse and
she explains to him that she was sent by Juliet. Romeo tells her his plans for
marriage and requests that she give him a rope ladder so that he can climb up
into Juliet’s room.
Prompt
C:
Romeo-
Haven’t you thought about what the consequences would be if you were caught
inside the Capulet’s house?
Mercutio-
Do you usually make fun of Romeo? Haven’t you thought about how it might affect
him?
Benvolio-
Why didn’t you stop Mercutio from aggravating the nurse?Nurse- What do you
think of Romeo being married to your charge, Juliet?
Romeo-
How can you trust the nurse, whom you don’t even know, to follow through in
your requests?
Prompt
F:
It
seems as if Mercutio and Romeo must have a strong relationship with one another
because of the way Mercutio teases him. Without that former connection, Romeo
more than likely would have reacted quite negatively when Mercutio berated him
about his love life. Instead, Romeo goes along with him and jokes, “Thou wast
never with me for anything when thou wast not there for the goose.” Each
character must have respect for one another to be able to make fun of Romeo’s
life struggles. Mercutio’s (quite consistent) teasing of Romeo is nothing more
than his way of communicating to Romeo that he thinks Romeo shouldn’t be down
on himself all the time. Romeo understands this and thus their relationship
proves to be solid.

DeleteThe questions that you ask all the characters make them have to think very hard and this shows your understanding of the reading. You ask Romeo if he has thought of the consequences for being caught. Do you think that there are any? And if so, what are they? When you explain the relationship between Romeo and Mercutio, I liked how you inferred it all off of their actions. They never bluntly said that they are friends, but you were able to assume so. Great job!
ReplyDeleteDerek, you bring up a great point in why Romeo should trust the nurse. It does seem like a possibility that the nurse would tell the Capulets and put Romeo in deep water. I also liked your explanation about why Romeo and Mercutio have known each other for a while. It is true that people tend to make fun jokes about each other as they get to know each other over time.
ReplyDeleteI really like the question you have given the characters in Act 2 Scene 4! My personal favorite question is Mercutio's because it truly has been running through my head this whole time while reading the story. Romeo seems to be such a sensitive character so I really do wonder why Mercutio kept making fun of him in such a way. Romeo could have done something much more stupid before because of Mercutio's behavior!
ReplyDeleteGood job Derek. Your approach to the relationship between Romeo and Mercutio was unique, and convincing. When I read through the scene, I never really stopped to think about their relationship. I agree with you, they have a pretty solid relationship. I liked how you explained this to us, and your analysis and commentary of your example was really well done. Keep up the good work!
ReplyDeleteDerek, you ask some great questions. I find myself asking the same questions. If Shakespeare was alive I'm sure we would discuss your questions for hours.
ReplyDeleteWhile I agree with you on how Mercutio and Romeo seem to have a strong friendship, Mercutio seems to have a very one sided, perhaps even skewed, view of Romeo and his personality. In this scene, Mercutio tells Romeo he's acting more like himself, but it is more that Mercutio has not seen Romeo smitten or in love like he is around Juliet.
