1.2 Searching for Love

Prompt A: Summary
Paris and Capulet discuss the topic of Juliet's marriage. Paris wants to marry Juliet as soon as possible; and while Capulet grudgingly agrees that Paris should be the one to take Juliet's hand in marriage, he is reluctant to marry her off so soon out of concern for her happiness and well being. Capulet invites Paris to his upcoming party; there he may capture Juliet's heart. He sends an illiterate servant to search for the people on his invitation list. Meanwhile, Romeo is still grieving for Rosaline. The servant approaches him, asking him to read the names on the list so that he may locate them. Romeo and Benvolio see Rosaline's name on the list (as well as many other "fair ladies"). Benvolio plans for himself and Romeo to attend the party so that Romeo will find a new love that surpasses Rosaline.

Prompt B: Theme
True love cannot be forced, since love will only be found when it is unsuspecting.

Prompt C: 5 Questions
Benvolio--Is your eagerness to help Romeo solely out of kindheartedness, or is attending the party as much for yourself as it is for him? What are your true motives?  Paris--Do you really love Juliet, or do you want to marry her for financial reasons? Capulet--What do you think of Paris? Romeo--Why are you so obsessed with Rosaline? How well did you know her? Servingman--Is illiteracy common among the people in Vienna?

  3. Your questions directed to the characters were very strong. Do you think that the only reason Paris is willing to marry Juliet is because of her money? Or could it be because of her beauty? As we see that Paris is picked to love Juliet, your theme foreshadows that their "love" may not be true. Without Romeo getting himself an invite to the party, would he have been able to find out if he truly loved Rosaline? Great job!
