1.2 A Sly Move and an Attempt to Woo

Prompt A: In Act 1, Scene 2, the scene opens as Lord Capulet speaks with Paris, the man who wishes to have Juliet's hand in marriage. Lord Capulet fears Juliet is too young to marry, but still allows Paris to come to the party, to attempt to woo Juliet. Later, Lord Capulet sends out a servant with a list of his invitees to the party, in hopes that the servant will find and invite them. Unfortunately, the servant is illiterate and requires help in reading the names. He comes across Romeo, who willingly reads out the list. To Romeo's surprise, he finds that his love, Rosaline, has been invited to the party. He deceives the servant into inviting him to the party, leaving out his heritage of Montague, because he wants to attempt to win back Rosaline.

Prompt C:
Romeo, what will you do if your heritage is discovered at the party?
Paris, what if Juliet wants you to wait for her until she is older? Will you?
Benvolio, will you try to stop Romeo from attending the party?
Lord Capulet, don't you think you should have tried harder to keep Paris away from your daughter if you think she's too young to get married?
Romeo, what will you do if Rosaline refuses your love again?

Prompt E:
The image of a mask represents this scene, but mainly Romeo's part in it, because he's disguising himself in order to sneak into the Capulet's party. Not only a physical disguise, Romeo is also hiding his true heritage, Montague, because he'll never get let into the party if the Capulet's find out who he really is. Romeo is mentally and physically deceiving the Capulet's in order to find his true love, Rosaline.

  1. I like how you chose an image that not only symbolizes how Romeo feels in this scene, but also what is happening at the party.

  2. I really like how your image ties in to the future scenes of this story. When you say, "Romeo is mentally and physically deceiving the Capulet's in order to find his true love, Rosaline," what do you mean by the mental ways that romeo will deceive the Capulet's?

  3. I think if Romeo had been discovered at the party, there would have been a big commotion. Considering the long disagreement, I think that there would be a huge uproar.
