1.3 Discussing Marriage

Prompt A: Summary

Before Lord Capulet's party, Lady Capulet calls Juliet to meet her to have an important conversation. She also asks Juliet's nurse to stay with them for the discussion. Lady Capulet tells Juliet that she has reached the age where she should start thinking about marriage, and that the Count Paris has shown that he would like to marry Juliet. Lady Capulet asks Juliet her feelings about marriage, and Juliet replies that she does not want to commit to a man yet, but she will see if she likes him. Lady Capulet tells her that she can watch him at the party that night, and see his demeanor.

Prompt B: Theme

True love cannot be forced upon a person.

Prompt C: Questions:

Juliet- Do you have any other opinions about being married so young?
Do Juliet's parents approve of Count Paris?
Why doesn't Juliet just say she will marry who and when she wants?
Why is Lord Capulet not a part of this conversation?
Is Juliet allowed to choose who she marries, or can she only pick from men her parents choose?

  1. Your theme for this scene and the manner in which you summarized it is very accurate. Your question asking why Lord Capulet is not part of this conversation is a thoughtful question. I believe that Juliet's parents do approve of Count Paris based on the fact that Lord Capulet is seen talking with him about Juliet and Lady Montague wished for Juliet to look at him at the party and see if she likes him.

  2. The theme sentence is very pertinent. I believe the whole point of this scene is exactly that Juliet won't be forced to marry Paris. For the first question, I think Juliet actually responded something to the effect of "that is a honor of which I have not dreamt," meaning that she has not thought at all of marriage yet.
