3.5 Lovers Torn Apart

Prompt A: Summary
In this scene Romeo and Juliet have just gotten married by Friar Lawrence and Romeo sneaks up a ladder to Juliet's room to be with her the night of their wedding. Juliet found out earlier that Romeo had killed Tybalt because Tybalt killed Mercutio. The consequence for Romeo's action is he is exiled from Verona. Juliet tries to get Romeo to stay with her a little longer in her room, but soon realizes why he has to leave so quickly. Juliet's mother enters her room after Romeo leaves and sees Juliet balling. Her mother thinks she is crying for Tybalt when she is really crying for Romeo. Her mother tells Juliet she wishes she could poison Romeo for what he did, and to keep up her cover Juliet offers to mix the poison herself. Juliet's mother proceeds to tell Juliet that her and her father have arranged for Juliet and Paris to marry on Thursday which sends Juliet on a terror. Juliet openly disregards her fathers wishes and in response her father says he will disown her if she does not obey. She looks to her mother for support in fighting back, but finds none. Soon she is left alone in her room with the Nurse and looks to her for support that Romeo will come home soon and they will be together forever, but Juliet is shocked when she hears the Nurse say that Juliet should marry Paris. With no one on her side Juliet arranges to meet Friar Lawrence in secret from her family.

Prompt B: Theme
The theme of this scene is lying to others and doing the opposite of what you are told to keep your secret.

Prompt E: Image

I choose this image because it represents the relationship between Juliet and her parents. Juliet wants to marry for love, she wants to marry Romeo, but her parents want Juliet to marry Paris. They feel that Juliet will live the best life with him, thus pulling her in the opposite direction.

  5. Riley, the image you choose made me think of Juliet's relationship with her parents in a whole new way. Now it seems as if they are constantly fighting, and before it seemed like her parents had full control over her. it is interesting to have a new perspective on their relationship.
