Act 3 Scene 5 Juliet's Secret Love

Act 3 Scene 5

Prompt A Summary: Romeo is about to climb down from Juliet's balcony. She is asking him to stay a little longer but Romeo must go or else he'd be captured and executed. The nurse comes into Juliet's room warning them that Lady Capulet is coming. Romeo then climbs down and leaves. Lady Capulet enters Juliet's room and sees Juliet sad. She then tells Juliet that she will marry The County Paris, on the next Thursday morning. Juliet tells her she will not marry any man other than Romeo. Lord Capulet comes in and yells at Juliet, telling her that she will marry Paris, next Thursday or else she may not look him in the eye again. Juliet says that she is going to confession, but instead is going to talk to Friar Lawrence.

Prompt C 5 Questions:
1. Lady Capulet, why do you only agree with Lord Capulet?
2. Lord Capulet, why do you have such a big temper?
3. Why do Juliet's parents treat her so poorly?
4. Why is Juliet treated like a door mat from her parents?
5. Why is Juliet forced to marry at such a young age?

Prompt F Relationship: The relationship between Juliet and her father is very poor. Lord Capulet only demands and never listens. Juliet begged him to not make her marry Paris. Lord Capulet reacted in a bad way. (He has very low tolerance and patience skills.) Lord Capulet answered to Juliet's begging, by saying "Hang thee, young baggage, disobedient wretch! I tell thee what: get thee to church a Thursday,Or never after look me in the face. Speak not, reply not, do not answer me." Juliet is forced to sit there in silence listening to her father telling her to do unfair things. They are not close at all. If they were to be close, Lord Capulet would have to listen.

  1. Mira, all of your prompts really capture the whole scene. I especially like how thought out your questions are. They made me wonder the same things, like why is Juliet forced to marry at such a young age. I also like how you described the relationship between Lord Capulet and Juliet using quotes from the text and commentary.

  2. Mira, I really enjoyed the way that you explained the relationship between Juliet and her father because I agree with you. Juliet's father does not listen to what she wants, but only to what will benefit himself.
