4.5 Playing Possum

Prompt E

This picture represents act four scene five because Juliet is literally playing possum so she can see Romeo again.

Prompt B
You never know what you have until it is gone.

Prompt A
The scene starts with Juliet having already taken the potion that will make her appear dead. When her nurse walks in to her room she is initially unaware of Juliet state, assuming she has fallen asleep. Upon further inspection however, it is discovered that Juliet is "dead" and the distraught nurse calls for the lord and lady of the house. Once everyone has arrived and understands the situation, the parents grieve for their lost daughter.

3.5 Capulets Orchard

Prompt E:
Prompt B: People should not be forced into doing something that they don't want to do.

Prompt A: Juliet and Romeo just got married, her parents do not know that she is already married. Which causes her to be forced into marriage with Paris. Juliet is afraid to tell her parents because of the rivalry between Montagues and Capulets so she keeps it a secret. Juliet tries to explain to her father that she does not want to marry Paris but he tells her "Thank me no thankings, nor, proud me no prouds,/But fettle your fine joints 'gainst Thursday next,/To go with Paris to Saint Peter's Church,/Or I will drag thee on a hurdle thither." Which leaves her to say "I'll to the friar, to know his remedy:/If all else fail, myself have power to die."

4.1 Haste for Marriage

Prompt A - In this scene, Paris is anxiously trying to arrange marriage plans with his beloved Juliet. To Paris' understanding, they will get married on Thursday, though to his disbelief, Juliet doesn't actually love him back, nor wants to marry him back. Throughout the scene, Paris is trying to arrange plans to marry Juliet with the Friar. Soon after Juliet greets Paris and the Friar, Paris departs and Juliet then explains to the Friar that she does not love Paris, and would rather marry Romeo, her true love.

Prompt B - The theme throughout this scene would be love, as both Juliet and Paris both have a haste for marriage, though with different people.

Prompt C (Paris) - Soon it will be Thursday, and I will have Juliet as mine own. My father Capulet will have us married on Thursday if I need so, and I would rather be married to my beloved soon enough. Unfortunately before the Marriage, Juliet is very sad due to Tybalts death, which will be very ill minded. Hopefully she will be able to disregard that as a result of our marriage. The sooner the better, as Im very anxious but also scarcely worried that we will not get married.

2.2 or Sneak Out

Prompt A
Juliet is speaking to herself thinking about Romeo. Juliet hears something shaking in her backyard it was Romeo who appears among the bushes and plants. A dark night were Romeo and Juliet talk to each other about their love for each other. Juliet is worried about Romeo being caught. They talk over about being married. Juliet tells Romeo to send the time and place to her. So she would know that they both agree to their marriage.
Prompt B
The theme is the love has no limit of being stopped by anyone.
Prompt C
Romeo-Why do you love Juliet at this point?
Juliet- What goes through your head about liking a Montague?
Romeo-Do feel bad about liking a Capulet?
Juliet-The breaking of the rule of liking a Montague affect you as a Capulet?

4.5 Blessed with Death

Prompt B
Treat your loved ones with respect, or you will regret it when they are gone.

 Prompt D
"Friar Lawrence: Come, is the bride ready to go to church?
Capulet: Ready to go, but never to return./Oh son, the night before thy wedding day/Hath death lain with thy wife./There she lies,Flower as she was, ravaged by him./ Death is my son-in-law, death is my heir./My daughter he hath wedded. I will die/And leave him all; life living, all is death's." (4.1) I really enjoyed this section in the scene because of the clever analogies that Lord Capulet is using for Juliet's death. This passage really captures the grief that he must be feeling over her death. It also illustrates his regrets over not having Juliet be wed before her demise, for now he has no heir.  Parts of Lord Capulet's metaphor is truly quite selfish, he stresses how awful it is that she has died the day before her wedding and focuses on the negative effects that her death will have on himself, rather than focus on the tragedy at hand. I particularly liked Capulet's response to Friar Lawrence asking if Juliet was ready for church, it is a really well put way of explaining to the reader that this day that was supposed to be full of glee and cheer (Juliet's wedding) , has turned into a day of mourning (Juliet's funeral).

Prompt E

I feel like this image really symbolizes this scene because Juliet's death is all a deception. Her parents and ones around her are all unaware of this though, and are mourning over her fake death.

This shows how if their is something someone doesn't want to overcome they will just go around it. They will do so at all costs.

4.1 The Plan is Made

Prompt A: Summary

In the beginning of the scene, County Paris goes to Frair Lawrence to explain his plan to marry Juliet. Frair Lawrence, already knowing that Romeo and Juliet have been wed, tries to convince Paris that he should slow his haste and get to know Juliet before he commits to marriage. Angered by this, Paris is determined to marry Juliet within the week. Conveniently, Juliet comes to visit the Frair and meets Paris at the Frair's cell. Disgusted by Paris, Juliet makes it very obvious that he should leave. Once Paris is gone, Juliet expresses how she would rather die than be married to him and explores the option of suicide. Luckily for all, the Frair has another option that will not leave anyone dead. He suggests Juliet take a poison that will make her sleep but appear dead, and once everyone believes she is dead, she will be free to run away with Romeo. Juliet agrees to this plan and leaves.

Prompt B: Theme

The theme of Act 4, Scene 1 is growing up.

Prompt E: Picture

This picture captures the meaning of this scene because Juliet is defying her family's wishes by becoming independent and choosing who she will marry.

Acts 2 Scene 5 Reading Notes: The News Of The Marriage

Prompt A: Summary

Juliet is waiting in her garden as she awaits for the Nurse to come back to the gates with the news of Romeo. When the Nurse does return, she is exhausted and stalling for time to catch her breath. However, Juliet, being the impatient girl she is, gets angered by the Nurse about how she is stalling.
The Nurse makes Juliet feel bad for sending her to fetch the information about Romeo.
After all the commotion, Juliet finally gets the information from the Nurse to go over to Friar Lawrence's Cell to get married by Romeo. Juliet is finally happy and immediately heads over to the gates.

Prompt C: Questions

1.) Juliet, why is it that you are so eager to know about the information about Romeo?
2.) Nurse, why do you think you have the power to approve the fact that Romeo and Juliet are getting married?
3.) The Nurse, if the Capulet's know about this decision, you could get exiled. Why are you risking your life for two people to get married?
4.) Juliet, it's only been 3 scenes and you are already marrying someone you met in scene 1. What is your view on rushing marriage?
5.) The Nurse, in this scene, you tend to bring up random questions. What is your behind asking questions at random moments such as "Where is your mother?"

Prompt G: Character Imitation of Juliet
Dear Thou Diary,      April 21st, 1467

Where is the Nurse? Does it take that long for her to come back from finding information about Romeo? All I want is for her to show up with the information from my love...
UPDATE: The Nurse did finally show up! Romeo has asked me to marry him oh! This is the happiest day of my life. Will we have kids though? There is so many stuff to plan! I think we should have about 2 kids. I feel like I am rushing everything however. To marry someone I just met... I guess it's called Love at First Sight! I am thankful I am not marrying that Prince! How could my Father think that he could just pair me up with someone he thinks I love? I am in control of my own body and I get to make the decision of who I want to marry.

Sincerely,

Juliet

3.1

PROMPT A:
This scene takes place on the street. Mercutio suggests to Benvolio they should go inside. Tybalt enters with his men and speaks to Tybalt. Romeo enters and Tybalt insults him by calling him a villain. He tells them to draw their swords, wanting to start a fight. Mercutio draws his sword as well as Romeo and Tybalt. The men start to fight. Tybalt kills Mercutio. Romeo and Tybalt fight and kills Tybalt. The Prince, the Capulets, and the Montagues enter. Benvolio explains the story of the killing to Lady Capulet. Benvolio protects Romeo but Lady Capulet doesn't believe him. She wants Romeo killed.

PROMPT B:
Killing others is a crime.

PROMPT C:
Why did Tybalt offend Romeo?
Why did Tybalt start the fight?
Why did Tybalt continue to fight after he killed Mercutio?
Why doesn't Tybalt like Romeo?
Why does Lady Capulet not believe Benvolio?

3.1 Hate has a deadly outcome

Prompt A
In this scene Mercutio and Benvolio are in Verona when someone they dislike shows up. Tybalt shows up angry looking for Romeo for showing up at the Capulet's party. Mercutio and Tybalt start getting into an argument when Romeo shows up and tries to stop a fight from occurring. Tybalt is angered and wants to fight while Romeo doesn't want to start a fight. As Tybalt is trying to fight Romeo Mercutio is watching and Pulls out his sword on Tybalt because Romeo wouldn't. Mercutio and Tybalt to fight and Romeo gets involved. While Romeo is trying to stop the fight Mercutio gets stabbed and falls to the ground Tybalt flees. Romeo and Benvolio stay with Mercutio untill he dies. As Romeo is by himself and Tybalt shows up and Romeo is angered. Romeo and Tybalt fight and Romeo stabs him and killing him. Romeo has to flee for killing him.

Prompt B
Hate can destroy a persons life.

Prompt E
I chose this image because there is love and hate involved in this scene. There is love involved when Romeo and Juliet marry in this scene. There is hate in this scene when a fight breaks out resulting in Mercutio being killed and Romeo full of hate kills Tybalt.

5.3 Looks may be decieving

Prompt A: Summary

Act 5 scene 3 is the most crucial scene in the book. Even though it's more likely for the climax and suspense to be located in the middle of the book, the climax is seen at this particular scene. Paris has already been aware of the "death" of Juliet. Paris being the fiance of Juliet, he goes to her tomb with flowers. Romeo arrives as well and is anxious to see Juliet laying in her death bed. Paris challenges Romeo to a duel and Paris is killed due to the fight. Romeo takes the poison which he bought, and drinks it as he dies slowly while he kisses Juliet. Juliet awakes from her temporary "death" and finds both Romeo and Paris dead. Friar Lawrence enters the tomb, but soon after leaves due to the noise of Juliet which scares him off. Juliet then takes Romeo's dagger and kills herself with it. After awhile, the Prince, the Capulet's and the Montague arrive at the tomb and find the dead bodies. The scene ends with Friar Lawrence giving an account of the marriage of Romeo and Juliet which whose deaths end the rivalry and hostility between them.

Prompt B: Theme

Love is a sacrifice, without sacrifice, there is no love.

Prompt E: Image

I chose this image to represent all of Act 5 scene 3 since it shows that looks can be deceiving. I know Romeo bought the poison before he even got to see Juliet in the tomb. But the again, if the poison had been taken awhile before the time she did, Romeo wouldn't have ended up dead and neither could have Paris. The looks of Juliet laying dead, appears true, but no one else knows it's fake poison exept for the Friar.

5.3 A Grave Miscommunication

Prompt: E

This cartoon represents miscommunication because one person is drowning and the other one is trying to help by giving him soap. This is like Romeo when he hears Juliet is dead. He kills himself, even though Juliet is still alive.

Prompt: A

Next to the tomb, Paris tells his page to keep watch while he gives Juliet flowers. Paris then spots Romeo, but he then dies to Romeo's sword. Romeo drinks a vial of poison he bought from Apothecary. Romeo and Paris are dead on the floor when Friar Lawrence rushes in to wake Juliet. Friar Lawrence tries to get Juliet out of the tomb, but she wants to stay there because she knows Romeo took poison. To be with Romeo, Juliet takes her life with her dagger. The Page gets the watchmen to see what had happened and they call both of the houses to see.

Prompt: B

The theme in this chapter is that you should always check your facts before you over commit.

3.5 Hiding Juliet's Love

Prompt A: Summary
Act 3, scene 5 begins where Romeo is preparing to leave Juliet's room after their wedding because he will soon be exiled to Mantua. Juliet, as she loves Romeo, doesn't want him to leave her but understands that Romeo must leave or else be captured and executed. When it is early morning, Romeo and Juliet sadly say goodbye because the Nurse has warned them that Lady Capulet is about to enter the room. Romeo then starts to climb down the balcony and the lovers catch a last glimpse of each other. Juliet sits down in her room and starts to weep while Lady Capulet walks in thinking that Juliet is crying over Tybalt. Sternly, she affirms Juliet that crying won't bring anyone back from the dead. Lady Capulet also tells Juliet how much she hates Romeo, and, hiding her secret love, Juliet follows along. The discussion between the two then quickly moves to the topic of marriage; Lady Capulet telling Juliet that she is to marry Paris in several days. Juliet is very hesitant and angry about this, especially when her father, Capulet comes in and demands that Juliet must be married to Paris. Later, the Nurse tells Juliet to marry Paris and forget about Romeo, but Juliet is still irritated and wants to go to the Friar for help.

Prompt B: Theme
The theme of this scene is that it is better to have love and to keep a secret then to not have love and share your secret, which might end up with consequences.

Prompt E: Image

I chose this image because it symbolizes the fact that Romeo and Juliet are being torn apart. Romeo being sent far away, and Juliet being forced to marry Paris. The lovers both have broken hearts because they aren't able to see each other, and they always think about each other.

2.5 The Suspense of the Nurse's Arrival

Prompt A:

Juliet despairs that the Nurse will not come back and bring her news about Romeo. When the Nurse finally does come back, Juliet badgers relentlessly her even though the elderly nurse is clearly out of breath. Then, when the Nurse delays Juliet further by first questioning why Juliet must love Romeo of all men, Juliet grows even more frustrated. The Nurse then then reveals to Juliet that Romeo is waiting for her at the cell of Friar Lawrence. Then Under the guise of taking a confession Juliet departs for Friar Lawrence's to meet up with Romeo.

Prompt D:
Juliet:  ...But old folks, many feign as they were dead,
Unwieldy, slow, heavy, and pale as lead.

Enter NURSE and CLOWN

Juliet :O God, she comes.—O honey Nurse, what news?
Hast thou met with him?

This quote was one of my favorites because it highlights how desperate and emotional Juliet is in her anticipation of the Nurse. In the space of two lines Juliet's stance towards the Nurse completely changes. At first she describes how old and slow the Nurse is. But once the the Nurse actually arrives, Juliet shifts gears and begins to flatter and act kindly towards the Nurse saying "O honey nurse." While in only a few moments prior, she was cursing the general physical incompetence of elderly people.

Prompt E:

In this scene Juliet reminds me a child that is constantly asking her parents, in this case the Nurse, "Are we there yet?". Although in her case she says," What did Romeo say?" even though the Nurse is obviously fed up with her.

5.1 A Fatal Message

Prompt B: True love clouds ones vision and prevents them from acting and thinking clearly.

Prompt C:
1. Romeo: Why did you go to such lengths to buy poison from the apothecary when you could have killed yourself with a dagger?
2. Romeo: How did you believe that Juliet died - from natural causes or suicide?
3.  Why hasn't anybody else told Romeo that the Capulet's were planning to marry Juliet to Count Paris?
4. Balthasar: Why are you so dedicated to Romeo- are you an employee of the Montagues?
5. Romeo: Why are you so lighthearted at the beginning of the scene? Are you not sad about your situation with Juliet?
6. Apothecary: How have you become so poor and desperate for money to break your morals and sell the poison to Romeo?

Prompt F: Although Romeo is portrayed as heroic and well-intentioned, it is clear that he still holds to the common class structures of their time. This is evident through his brief yet revealing encounter with the apothecary, who is far less fortunate than Romeo and the Montagues.  Off to his self-inflicted death, Romeo could have left this starving man with any amount of money for his services, yet he only gives him enough to bribe the man into letting him buy the illegal poison. Romeo has been accustomed to a certain lifestyle, and lacks sympathy for the people who are considered below him. He tells the apothecary to "buy food"with the little money he has given him, and does not show much compassion.  Throughout the novel, Romeo is too tied up in his own grief to care for others.
Act 3 Section 5: Hiding True Feelings

Prompt A:
In this scene, it starts out with Romeo sneaking up to Juliet's room to be with her. Not having much time, Romeo and Juliet say there goodbyes when Juliet's mother comes in unexpectedly. After Juliet leaves Romeo crying because she doesn't know when she will see him again, she goes in to see her mother. Lady Capulet mistakenly thinks that Juliet is crying because of her cousin, Tybalt's death. Wanting to cover up her true feeling for Romeo, Juliet pretends to want to get revenge for her cousin's death and kill Romeo. When Lady Capulet believes Juliet, she explains to her that she will marry Paris this Thursday. Shocked by this news, Juliet refuses and says she would rather marry Romeo who her mom thinks she hates. This scene ends with Juliet, her mother and her father arguing about the wedding between Juliet and Paris.

Prompt B:
The theme of this scene is that it is better to love and have losses, than to not have love be risk free.

Prompt C:
Juliet: What would you have done if your mom saw you and Romeo on the balcony?
Lady Capulet: Why is Paris the best choice for Juliet?
Nurse: Why did you stop helping Juliet try to be with Romeo?
Capulet: How did you decide that Paris was the best match for Juliet?
Capulet: Would Tybalt be your heir is he had not been killed?

theres no match for true love

5.3

Prompt C
Why does does Romeo kill himself?
Why does Juliet take the sleeping position if she now it would not be taken lightly?
Does anyone now that Juliet is faking her death?
Why does Romeo challenge Paris to a duel if Paris had nothing to do with Juliet's death?
Why does Balthasar tell Romeo about Juliet's death?

Prompt B
Sometimes death is the only way to end these to familys hatred.

Prompt A
This chapter Romeo and juliet love eachother so much that they are willing to do anything to be together. Juliet goes to the friar lawrence to get a sleeping postion, so that she doesnt have to marry parris. When they find her asleep they think she is dead. When Romeo finds out about this, he goes to the grave yard and finds Paris. Romeo then  kills paris. Romeo then kills himself because without juliet he feels that theres no point in living. When Juliet wakes up from the sleeping postion she kills herself because she finds Romeo beside her dead.

4.2 Preparation

Propmt A:

At the capulets home the preparation for the wedding are in full swing, specially because lord capulet moved it to wednesday, which is the next day. He tells his servingmen to get him 20 cunning cooks, and they tell him that they are only going to get cooks who can lick their fingers. Lord Capulet questions that Juliet went to see Friar Lawrence; but suddenly she is back with a smile on her face. Juliet repents of the sin of disobedient opposition, and begs for her father to forgive her. Lord Capulet gets overjoyed and glad because Juliet is willing to marry Paris. Juliet and her nurse goes to Juliet's room to pick out the dress that she is going to wear for her wedding, while her parents stay and make the wedding preparations.

Prompt B:

If you want it bad enough you'll find a way

Prompt E:

The left side of this picture shows how they look on the outside, and the right side shows how they feel on the inside. I think it relates to this chapter because Juliet goes to her dad to seek forgiveness and pretends that she is excited and that she is happy, when she feels totally different on the inside.
