2.4 The Messenger

Prompt A
Mercutio and Benvolio are standing around wondering where Romeo had been since last night. They talk about a letter from Tybalt to Romeo, which they assume is a challenge. When Romeo arrives, Mercutio makes fun of him for his love life. The two start joking around with each other. Mercutio states that this is the Romeo they have been missing for a while. The Nurse and Peter come by, and the nurse wants to speak to Romeo. Mercutio makes lots of insulting jokes at the Nurse. The Nurse tells Romeo that she has been sent by Juliet, and Romeo asks her to tell Juliet to go to Friar Lawrence’s cell that night so that they can get married. He also asks the Nurse to bring a rope ladder so that he can climb to Juliet’s room.

Mercutio: Have you ever considered that your comments may hurt Romeo’s feelings?

Benvolio: Why do you not protect the nurse from Mercutio’s hurtful comments?

Romeo: How can you trust that the Nurse was not actually sent by Lord Capulet?

Nurse: Do you think Romeo is a good match for Juliet?

Romeo: Have you ever considered the possible outcomes if you were to be caught in the Capulet’s house?

Prompt E

For this scene, I chose a picture of Hermes, the messenger god. I chose it because the Nurse acts as a messenger throughout most of the scene. First, she delivers Juliet's message to Romeo, then Romeo tells her to deliver a message to Juliet.

1.2 Let's Party!

Prompt A
Lord Capulet is walking down a street with Count Paris and a servant. They start to talk about Paris' wish to marry Juliet, Lord Capulet's daughter. Lord Capulet believes she is much too young, but Paris argues that many mothers have been made happy even younger than Juliet. Capulet invites Paris to a party that night, and tells him there will be many beautiful ladies there, including Juliet. He hands a list to his servant and tells him to find all of the people on it and tell them about the party. The servant, not able to read, wonders what he will do, until Benvolio and Romeo walk down the street. He asks for their help, and as Romeo reads the list to the servant, he notices the name of Rosaline, the girl he has been pursuing. The servant then invites the two to the party. Benvolio thinks it is a great idea because if they go, Romeo can see that Rosaline does not compare to other beauties, and Romeo agrees to go.

Romeo - Why are you so determined to win Rosaline's heart?
Paris - What stands out to you in Juliet, making you love her?
Benvolio - With Romeo so deeply in love, are there any women that you love?

I picked a fire as a symbol for this scene because when Romeo gets invited to the Capulet party, it sparks a fire of hope in his heart that he may finally get to meet Rosaline and maybe make her love him. However, fires can also be dangerous. Romeo is going to a party held by Lord Capulet, which he does not know. Being a Montague, things might go wrong for him and he could get in a lot of trouble.
