Scene 3.3- Quit the whining!

Prompt A:

Friar Lawrence welcomes a desperate Romeo into his cell. The friar tries to console Romeo, who rants on and on about how his banishment is even worse than being executed because he must live without Juliet. Romeo then speaks a long monologue about how even flies and other despicable creatures can view Juliet while he can't. Then, a knock is heard on the door, and the Friar begs Romeo to get up and hide so he won't get caught. When he finds out the knocker is Juliet's nurse, he lets her in while Romeo is still in the room because she won't tell on him. The Nurse scolds Romeo for acting so weak, but Romeo threatens to kill himself for causing Juliet sadness. Friar Lawrence then sends Romeo off, promising his servant will bring him news about Juliet.

Prompt B:

I think the theme of this scene is relief, because even though the majority of the scene shows Romeo in despair, in the end he is consoled and is now ready to leave Verona (after a quick visit to Juliet).

Prompt C:

Romeo, what stopped you from killing yourself when you found out you made Juliet sad?

Romeo, why do you see the friar as a fatherly figure when you have a wise father?

Friar Lawrence, why are you so eager to help Romeo?

Nurse, why are you so intent on helping Romeo?

Romeo, how would you act if Juliet was banished, not you?

1.1 The Despair of Love

Prompt A:Summary

The scene starts with two servants who try to show off to each other by boasting how fearless they are and how much they want to fight. When they meet more servants from a rival household, they bite their thumbs and a fight breaks out. Benvolio, a cousin to Romeo Montague, takes out his sword and tries to stop the fight. However, Tybalt, a member of the Capulet family, arrives and draws Benvolio into the fight. The battle escalates as random civilians and the heads of the Montague and Capulet families join in. This continues until the Prince of Verona breaks up the fight and threatens the participants with death if they ever fight again. Everyone leaves except Lady Montague and Benvolio, who ponder why Romeo is so sad all the time. Benvolio talks to Romeo and finds out he loves Rosaline, who does not love him back. Benvolio suggests Romeo take his mind off the matter by going after another girl.

Prompt B: Theme

The theme of the scene is despair because Romeo is so depressed about not being able to woo Rosaline.

Prompt E: Image
This shattered glass is just like Romeo Montague's shattered dreams. It represents how he is physically and mentally broken on the inside. When Benvolio speaks to him about how he must move on from Rosaline , more and more cracks appear on the glass. Just like cracks can never be completely fixed again on glass, the pain Rome feels from rejection will never heal on his heart.
