Prompt A: Summary
Mercutio and Benvolio come across Tybalt and his friends on the street. When Romeo arrives, Tybalt attempts to engage him in a fight, but Romeo, very clearly, tells him that he has no interest in violence. Mercutio then answers Tybalt's challenge and the two start swinging their swords at each other. During this exchange, Mercutio is fatally wounded and dies. After Mercutio's death, Tybalt once again tries to provoke Romeo into fighting, and this time Romeo complies. He kills Tybalt in a rage, avenging Mercutio. When the Tybalt's body is discovered, Benvolio tries to persuade the Prince to pardon Romeo, but the Capulets want him to pay in blood. The Prince reaches a compromise, banishing Romeo.

Act 1 Scene 2: The Marriage Hunt
Prompt A: Summary
Count Paris approaches Lord Capulet and expresses his eagerness to marry Juliet, his daughter. Lord Capulet thinks that Juliet is too young to marry, but knows that the time is right, so he throws a dinner party in order to find her a husband. He hands a guest list to his servant, ordering him to invite all the people named. However, the servant never learned to read, so when he bumps into Romeo and Benvolio, he asks them to decipher the list. For their trouble, the servant invites the two men, thinking that they are not of the house of Montague. Romeo realizes that the girl he loves will be present at the ball, so he decides to attend.
